Whether beggar or king
Matters not to me.
Unlettered, unread
Or a Harvard degree,
Elegant cladding
Matters not one whit
And possessions not a tiny bit.

But give me speech full of candour
A questing mind full of wonder,
Delicate senses that can feel another
And the honour and fire of a holy lover.

Passion diverted to money or wine
To eternity's gaze is a waste of time
Eternity at distance seen
Not the limited view of hypnotic dream.

Of the highest stakes is the game I play,
The lover's field wins the day
The rest is for those who have lost their way,
That loss has a heavy price to pay.
